Sticking with it!

No matter the score, no matter the GAA or SAV%, I’m going to stick with it. I will be stubborn enough to remember that I can only get better.

Not much to say about the game against the Puck n’ Shillelaghs. We got our asses handed to us 8:1 loss. 8:20 Sunday evening game should have been a better outcome, but hey whatever.

1st period: Let 5 Goals in
2nd period: Let 2 Goals in
3rd period: Let 1 Goal in

Half way through the second period as I dug the puck out of my net, the Ref said to me… “Gonna be a long night huh?” – Yes, Yes it was.

Going into the third, I said to myself, F&ck it – Shake it off, be an a-hole and give it all you got. Only let 1 goal in…..maybe there’s something to that thinking? Even did a pathetic pad stack that I didn’t mean to do. Poke checked an attacker that was trying to dangle me (I got the stink eye from him right after) and 2 glove saves. It was a weird mind-set that’s for sure. Almost like realizing that you need to step-up because no one is going to???

As I’ve told my daughters team, the score isn’t just on one player, its a team effort. BUT when you allow 8 goals in you can’t help but feel a little down on your own performance. I’d rather do that than blame someone else anyways.

Out of 557 goalies that have played at CanLAN Winnipeg this year, I rank 508 in GAA and 490 in SAV%, but everyone else below me only has a handful of games. What does that mean? Beats the f&ck out of me.

Holy crap!

1:08 into the first period, the swimming pool inside, outside, beside and ALL OVER my crease caused my forward to loose the puck in the slush….something I was not anticipating and the BLADES OF STEEL hot on his heals popped it in the corner of my net, just as I was getting up from the post – Live and learn I guess.

Can’t remember the second goal but I swatted the 3rd one in myself by a bad angle on my blocker – Live and learn some more.

Half way through the first period I though “Wow this game is going by really fast”. Half way through the second, I could not wait for it to be over! I was working so hard I thought I was literally going to puke on the ice. The Third period was a gong show. So tired, I just couldn’t get any speed to make saves that I could have at the beginning on the game.

My D has been blocking a lot of shots for me lately, but they don’t always work. A funny deflection off one of my D’s chest protector plopped the puck on an attacking forwards stick and I couldn’t react fast enough.

I genuinely appreciate the ref’s, time keepers, score keepers, all they do is get questioned on  their calls, but that doesn’t stop me from questioning the 29 SA when it felt like 40 going into the third! I’m keeping track myself next time.

A game ending and demoralizing 7:0 loss-  What can I say? Back into the +6 GAA I am!

Can I tell you a story? Got a minute?

Saturday morning I got an email from Troy, he plays on my team and also on the Wednesday night guys hockey. He was asking if guys could come out to ladies hockey that night because of low attendance. They were also looking for two goalies. Wanting the ice time, I said yes, BUT before that I had to take my daughter Sarah (@kidgoalie40) to her regularly scheduled goalie lesson and my FIRST REAL goalie lesson.

During that lesson I discovered that my almost 45 year old joints don’t quiet rotate and move the way a goalie should, but that’s OK, because I can feel a larger range of motion now than when I first started in September. Had a lot of good take aways from that lesson and got a good workout even though it was only 30min long.

Fast forward to the evening, I show up to the rink and as I’m walking in one of the girls also walking in thanks me for coming and mentions that they have not had a goalie all year long! It was a fun game, I tried a bunch of things that didn’t work and got scored on by some wicked hockey players. There were a lot of first timers so the overall pace was slower, but the more experienced players turned it on when they got the chance.

Three guys from the Bench Warmers team were there and Josh, Sarah and my goalie coach was also there as a player and he lit me up when he could. He knows my weaknesses and has no problem in exploiting them! – That’s OK with me too, how else am I going to get better? The night ended with a few refreshments and some laughs with the  guys that came.

The next morning however was an 8:45 am ice time with my youngest daughter playing Timbits hockey. I had to leave the ice half way through though, because I had my own game at 10:20 am – our first morning game and even better, my wife and girls came to watch me play and cheer me on! – I tried hard to ignore the  banging on the glass but it was nice to have the support.

The last time we played the “Johnny come Latelys” we got spanked 6:2. This game it did help that we had 16 skaters and they only had 8. The first period ended in us up 4:0, The second period saw the Johnny’s step on the gas, they really held us on par with no scoring in the second. I really thought that their tanks would be empty in the 3rd, but 1min 8sec into the last frame they score with the puck tipping down off the bottom of my glove. Man was I pissed. Prior to the game in the locker room the topic of a “shutout” came up from the guys talking about how little players they had……they jinked me! Once they got that first goal, they were out for blood, they had a taste and I was kept busy for the rest of the 3rd. A scramble in behind, on the side and then in front of the net yielded them another goal. One that I felt hit the inside of my pads (through my gaping wide pads) – I pulled my skates together to close up the back side, but it was too late, the deed was done.

The game ended with a 7:2 win, one of our guys even got his first goal of the year – Apparently the Johnny’s didn’t check our stats before the game otherwise they would have realized why we were so happy and also in celebrating that last goal.

The other goalie didn’t want to get up a few times despite only having 3 more SOG than me…….crybaby 😉

After the game, we all went to Smitty’s for a pre-planned get together, ate wings, nacho’s, drank beer and were able to celebrate a much needed W. Best of all, my GAA dipped below 6!

That evening the hockey continued for me and the rest of the family as Sarah had a game against the Polar Bears. A 2:0 Shutout Win for her! In case your reading this and don’t already know, Sarah has been raising money for Pediatric Cancer Research at CancerCare Manitoba for the past 2 years, you can see what she is up to here: www.shutoutchildhoodcancer.ca A $59.00 personal donation thus far this year and a $ 1 310.00 Year to Date in donated funds!

I am donating my own GA and (haha) SO’s – So far I’m in it for $100 – This sport is an expensive one!

Well what can I say, the other goalie was much better than me. Much, much better. That doesn’t get me down, it gives me something to work towards.

The game against Pylons wasn’t my best performance. The first period ended in 0:0, but the 2nd and 3rd was a gong show. At least my GAA is slowly going down?

Next game this Sunday is against the “Johnny come Latelys” – Last meeting it was a 6:2 loss. Maybe they will still be full of Turkey and drunk from the holidays?

What a loss

Over all a decent game. Better goal tending from the “other guy”. I didn’t play my best. The late night (10:30) game kinda sucked and I didn’t have the energy I needed.

We scored one minute into the game so I had a good feeling. 3 min left in the 1st they returned the favor. Not too far into the 2nd a pass across my crease was tipped by one of our D right to an awaiting attacker at the point. I was out of position and boom, it was in. A few slipped under my pads and I helped us drop a 5:3 decision. 3 min left in the game and we scored to make it 3:4, but with 2-min left I shit the bed on a break away and let one in.

Last time we played Yah? Horray! we lost 6:2. So we are getting better????

I’m just going to put it out there for this one time, because if history repeats, it will be a LOOOOONG time before I get to say this.

THAT’S A .933% SAVE AVERAGE!!!!

The last time we played the Tuesday Nooners ( only a few weeks ago ) we lost 5:3. What changed? – We had 15 skaters and they had 8. BUT my guys played awesome. Back checks, passes, plays, good positioning. Just the kind of moral boost we needed. Good on ya guys! I even got a bit of an easy role as I only faced 15 SOG and most were a frantic play by the other team.

Shinny night

Almost not worth posting tonight, but considering I missed my game last night to go to the Women’s Canada versus USA game, I figured I should post something.

Tonight my daughters goalie coach came out to play with us. Playing out and chirping me of course the whole game. Glad he did, SUPER nice guy.

Apparently I move around too much (still). I thought I had that tamed down, but OK, something to work on. Not much to say, not my finest hour, let in probably 15 goals. I recorded it with a netcam, but I am not going to bore anyone with the low-lights.

I was thinking that this really needs to be a video blog, but it takes a certain kind of person to put themselves “out” there. Not sure if that’s me. Before you start, netcams are different – looking at my ass doesnt count.

Thoughts?

Missed game

So I had a choice, go with my wife and girls to the Women’s Canada VS USA game here in Winnipeg and stay the whole game by finding a sub, or stay for the first two periods and then leave to my 9:40 game.

Is it horrible for me to be happy that my team folded 7:0 without me and I stayed for the whole game to watch Canada topple USA 2:0 ????

I think I made a good decision:

My daughter Sarah with hockey hero Shannon Szabados

Wednesday night shinny! and Sarah’s goalie coach is coming to play with us! – Probably going to get schooled again.

Getting there!

I’m a few days late in this post, but as usual, life gets in the way of the fun stuff.

Thursday we played the Village People (So long ago, I had to check the schedule!) It was a good game, I made some good saves, let in some good shots that experience will fix in time.

Pleased with my performance despite the loss – Even got an 0.888 Save% this game!

Last time we played them it was a 7:3 loss

5:3 Loss – We were actually up 1 point TWICE! It was definitely my fault for the loss. My guys did well, kept the puck away, good back check (for the most part). The other goalie had 21 SA so the shots were there, he was just a better goalie.

One GA bounced forward off my shoulder and literally got batted in by the other team. One wrap around that I was convinced was coming from the other side. One clapper from the blue line that had no business going in. The others weren’t memorable.

I really need to work on the cherry pickers! HOLY FRIGGEN CRAP PEOPLE! Don’t be an ass and go for the cheap easy goals!!!!! (a D covering would be nice too)

My GAA went down again, sitting at a cool 7.16 and I lead the div with SA AND GA!
